Across Glasgow, there are spaces that slowly disappear from public use. Not because they lack value, but because maintenance falls away over time and access becomes more difficult year after year.

Overgrowth builds up. The once well-tread paths disappear from view. Areas that were once regularly used by local people gradually become forgotten.

A Modern-day Resurrection for Aged Local Linn Park Golf Course in Castlemilk

Linn Park Golf Course originally closed in March 2020 due to a combination of budget constraints, declining usage, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. While the main reason for its initial closure was the constraints of the pandemic, low budget and footfall levels had ultimately led to GCC and Glasgow Life's decision not to reopen it.

The site became derelict, and over 6 long years of neglect, the former golf course at Linn Park in Castlemilk became just another overgrown and wild space. What had once been a well-used local facility became harder to access and more difficult for the community to use in any meaningful way.

But despite the condition of the site, interest from the community never fully disappeared.

Local residents and volunteers began taking steps to reclaim parts of the land and make sections playable again, driven by a belief that spaces like this still matter to the surrounding community.

CM Gardens was proud to support that effort.

CM Gardens — Active in the Community

Working alongside local people, the team at CM Gardens assisted with vegetation clearance and grounds work to help reopen parts of the course that had become heavily overgrown over time. The project was not about completely redeveloping the land or changing what it was. It was about making the space usable again and helping restore access to an area that had gradually fallen into neglect.

Projects like this are important because they highlight a wider issue affecting many communities across Glasgow and beyond.

The Importance of Community Spaces

When public spaces are left unmanaged for long enough, people stop using them. Once that happens, decline tends to accelerate. Areas become inaccessible, visibility drops, and spaces that once had real community value begin to feel disconnected from the people around them.

Sometimes practical intervention at the right time can stop that decline from becoming permanent.

For CM Gardens, supporting work like this forms part of a wider approach to community responsibility. Not through slogans or campaigns, but through practical work that improves local environments and helps maintain spaces that people still care about.

The Linn Park project also reinforced something that often gets overlooked: community-led initiatives become far more effective when local residents, volunteers, and businesses work together.

Residents brought the energy and determination to see the course brought back into use. CM Gardens was able to contribute professional equipment, operational support, and grounds expertise to help move that effort forward safely and effectively.

As the business continues to grow, CM Gardens hopes to support more projects of this nature across Glasgow and the surrounding areas, particularly where neglected green spaces still hold value for the communities around them.

Taking Action Early is Key

Whether it’s overgrown land, inaccessible pathways, or public-facing spaces that have gradually fallen into decline, early action and consistent maintenance can make a significant difference over time.

The work at Linn Park was never about publicity. It was about helping support a local effort to reclaim a space that people still cared about. Sometimes, that alone is reason enough to get involved.
